It’s about the tribe

As much as we like to think politics is about economic self-interest, it’s not.  Sure lots of rich people want their tax cuts and lots of poor people want their “free stuff,” but modern American politics is shaped by so much more than that.  A nice, simple example– support for Trump based on who stands to benefit and lose from changes in ACA subsidies.  Captured in Lee Drutman’s tweet from a Nate Cohn Upshot article:

As Nate Cohn points out in the upshot article, the changes hit older and rural voters the hardest.  But, as Yglesias says, at least they get to say, “Merry Christmas.”  Also, Hillary Clinton was bad with emails.
