Trump was damn serious on immigration

Just what will happen with the wall remains to be seen, but Trump is seriously cracking down on immigration.  Of course, for those actually paying attention, this is not at all a surprise.  Plenty of Trump’s statements/supposed beliefs are clearly just catering to the Republican right, e.g., pro-life, conservative judges, tax cuts for rich people, etc., but Trump– and Bannon– has always been an anti-immigrant xenophobe.  Thus, empowered by the presidency, its no surprise there’s a serious crackdown.  The NYT story:

President Trump has directed his administration to enforce the nation’s immigration laws more aggressively, unleashing the full force of the federal government to find, arrest and deport those in the country illegally, regardless of whether they have committed serious crimes.

Documents released on Tuesday by the Department of Homeland Security revealed the broad scope of the president’s ambitions: to publicize crimes by undocumented immigrants; strip such immigrants of privacy protections; enlist local police officers as enforcers; erect new detention facilities; discourage asylum seekers; and, ultimately, speed up deportations.

The new enforcement policies put into practice language that Mr. Trump used on the campaign trail, vastly expanding the definition of “criminal aliens” and warning that such unauthorized immigrants “routinely victimize Americans,” disregard the “rule of law and pose a threat” to people in communities across the United States. [emphasis mine]

And, hooray for the NYT for insisting on including the reality for context:

Despite those assertions in the new documents, research shows lower levels of crime among immigrants than among native-born Americans.

You know what?  It is, in fact against the law for many of these people to be here.  Many of them do break laws regarding legal documentation to work and/or stay in the country.  But that sure as hell does not make them “criminal aliens” who “victimize Americans” and “pose a threat” to our safety.  That’s just pure racist (yes, because it sure wouldn’t be this way if they were European Christians) and xenophobic fear-mongering.  And truly pathetic.  But that’s Trump.  And Bannon.  And Trump’s America.  But, hey, Paul Ryan and friends will get their tax cuts!

In Trump and Bannon’s America, 90% or more white Christian Americans will still get screwed along with everyone else.
