Nice chart from CNN with some nice historical perspective on the turnout decline:
In truth, this is even worse than it looks. Since 1996 many states have passed laws to increase participation (mail-in balloting, extended early voting, same-day voter registration, etc.). Additionally, political campaigns have placed increasing emphasis on voter mobilization. And yet. To some degree, the media over-played the “America hates the candidates” theme. But, fair to say Americans–broadly speaking– sure was not inspired by their choices.
