Charts of the day

Public higher education?  We don’t need no stinkin’ public higher education.  Or so the budget writers in states across the country seem to be thinking.  Check out these depressing charts (via the Atlantic):

Not to be selfish, but even more depressing than this is for a college professor, it’s profoundly depressing for a dad who intends to put three kids through college.

And food for thought: These numbers come well after my trip to NCSU, where tuition had already risen in the previous decade or so by an order of magnitude and we were already protesting the Legislature’s cuts in the UNC system’s budget!

Ugh. I know that anecdotes aren’t the same as data, but if not for NC’s investment in its universities in the Triangle, my parents certainly wouldn’t have ended up there. I’m scared for what the next decades will bring for the state.
