The generation gap

Sorry for the slow posting of late.  Been pretty busy preparing a talk on the Generation Gap for UNC Political Science department today.  On the bright side, Pew did some of the hard work for me with some great charts.  This is a favorite:

In short, we’ve got two countervailing trends.  Not only are young voters more liberal than past young voters, but old voters are more conservative than past old voters.   Of course, on net, this is good for the Democrats as only one of those groups is going to start dying off in large numbers soon.  On the downside, old voters are much more reliable in midterm elections.  The Democratic challenge for 2014 is to do all they can to get younger voters out and avoid a repeat of 2010.  I would imagine the best minds in the Democratic party are working on that– we’ll see how far it gets them.
