In what should really come as no surprise to anybody who knows how criminal justice really works in this country, we now have overwhelming evidence that Texas (certainly no surprise there) has executed an innocent man. Bob Herbert has a great column today summarizing the whole thing. No excerpts from me. Just read it.
What always depresses me is that every time I discuss cases like this with my students (though, it's always been people released from death row till now), they always seem to think that the case in question is an extraordinarily rare exception. Simple logic tells us it's not. This case follows the same pattern they all do: bad forensic work, overzealous prosecutors, amoral jailhouse snitch, poor defendant. There you go. We do need to reform this system. Okay, read the column now if you haven't yet.
