In Sunday's LA Times, Jon Chait (one of the most astute political observers out there, in my opinion) writes that Republicans have almost completely failed to address the recent finding (from a libertarian thinktank, no less) that tax cuts actually produce more government spending. Chait concludes, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. So do conservatives really care about spending, or are they all insane?”
Got me to thinking about the findings on happiness I just posted. One of the favorite little facts I learned way back in my undergraduate Intro to Social Psychology class was that one of the reason that depressed people are depressed is they actually evaluate the world more honestly and accurately than those of us who are not depressed. So, maybe the secret to Republican happiness is simply failing to honestly consider the real state of the world. Beats depression, I guess.
